Abstract

The present study was carried out on 45 children with acute leukemias and lymphomas including 29 males and 16 females with their age ranging from 1 year to 15 years, out of these 16 patients had ALL, 9 had AML, 13 had NHL and 7 had HD, 32 children were reevaluated after induction of remission, 15 healthy children of matched age and sex were selected as a control group. Assessment of serum IL-12 using an ELISA technique at the time of diagnosis and after induction chemotherapy was performed. The level of sIL-12 was found higher in patients groups than the control group (P<O.OOI). Following induction chemotherapy, the surviving members of patients groups showed lower level of s1L-12 than before treatment (P<O. 00 I) but was still higher than the control group (P<O.OOI) so, longer periods of follow up are required to determine when, if at all, these s1L-12 levels will fall to the normal control level and whether a persistant elevation or reincrease after initial decrease will point at a certain outcome. This result may lead us to consider sIL-12 as an adjunctive aid in assessing successful remission and/or may be an early predictor of relapse. There was statistically significant difference of s1L-12 in ALL group compared with AML group (P<O.OOl) it is higher in ALL group, also, there was statistically significant difference of s1L-12 in HD group.
