Abstract

Background : Hemangiomas are the most common tumor of infancy. They are not present at birth, but appear around the second week of life, grow rapidly over next 6-10 months and slowly regress over next 7-10 years. On the other hand, vascular malformations are less common. They are present at birth, their growth is proportional with that of the patient and they never involute. Aim : Evaluation of different modalities of treatment of hemangiomas and vascular malformations of skin and mucous membranes. Results : Good response was obtained in 35.3% of cases after systemsic corticosteroids, 55.6% after intralesional steroid injection and 68.4% after sclerotherapy. Surgical excision is radical solution of the problem. Conclusion and recommendations : The treatment regimen should be tailored for each lesion. The selection of the proper line of treatment depends on: type, number, size, site and extent of the lesion, age of the patient, phase of hemangioma, presence of complications and psychological impact of the lesion on the child or his parents.
