Abstract

The present study was carried out to study the effect of early malnutrition on the postnatal development of the cerebellar cortex of the albino rat. Fifty-four newborn albino rats of both sexes were used in this study. They were divided into two groups: control (27 rats) and experimental (27 rats) groups. The control group had the normal physiological life with their mothers in the same cage, notably lactation. The experimental group was cross-fostered to non-lactating foster aunts; with the lactating mother for a day and with a non-lactating foster aunt for another day. Rats from each group (3 control and 3 experimental) were sacrificed at ages of 2, 5, 8, 11, 14, 17, 21, 28 and 35 days postnatally considering the day of birth as the date zero. The body weight of each rat was measured immediately before sacrifice. The animals were sacrificed by intracardiac perfusion of 10 % neutral formalin through the left ventricle. The brain was carefully dissected out, then weighted and kept in 10 % neutral formalin. The cerebellum was carefully removed from brain, weighted, dehydrated and embedded in paraffin. Median sagittal sections were made at 8-10 µm. and processed for staining with Haematoxylin and Eosin, cresyl fast violet (Nissl) and Glees’ silver stain.
