Abstract

Background: Head injuries are the second leading cause of hospitalization in developed countries. Morbidity and mortality from head injury are increasing and account for a substantial proportion of chronic disability in the community. Aim: In this study, we evaluated the effectiveness of the two thiopentone sodium doses 0.5gm/8h and 0.5gm/6h for brain protection in comparison to a control group of severe head trauma patients. Result: In this study, the two groups received thiopentone sodium showed a significant improvement in GCS and GOS than that of control group. Conclusion: We concluded that the use of small doses of thiopentone sodium(0.5gm/8h & 0.5gm/6h) in the first 24 hours associated with the conventional therapy led to significant improvement of morbidity and mortality in severe head trauma patients without causing profound hypotension.
