Abstract Intrauterine growth retardation (IUGR) , is defined as less than 10 percent of predicted fetal weight for gestational age that may result in significant fetal morbidity and mortality if not properly diagnosed. Intrauterine growth retardation constitutes a major clinical and public health problem worldwide particularly in developing countries. Many different factors influencing fetal growth and causes (IUGR) but the most common causes of IUGR in developing countries are intrauterine infections, chromosomal abnormalities, congenital malformation, maternal malnutrition and chronic debilitating diseases. Ultrasonography in combination with Doppler scans are considered the best tool for diagnosis and assessment of IUGR. Fetuses who suffer from growth retardation have higher perinatal morbidity and mortality. IUGR has also impact on the health of affected fetuses in childhood and adulthood life. Treatment options of IUGR is limited and a role of aspirin and corticosteroids therapy in the treatment of IUGR has not yet been substantiated. |
