Abstract

Mortality due to cancer has increased considerably since the start of this century. Colorectal carcinoma is the second leading cause of cancer death from 1950s to 1990s. Carcinoembryonic antigen is the most widely used clinical tumor marker. CEA immunoassay have found acceptance as a diagnostic adjunct in clinical diagnosis of colon cancer. However, it is now clear that elevated serum CEA concentrations are not specific for colon cancer only, but also, for other gastrointestinal tract tumors. The present study aimed to identify and establish a simple and fast diagnostic technique for detection of carcinoembryonic antigen secreted in urine. The traditional ELISAtechnique was also used for the determination of CEA in sera of gastrointestinal tract tumors patients using CEA monoclonal antibody. A comparison was carried out on the results of the two techniques. 388 serum samples were collected from gastrointestinal tumor patients (hospitalized in the Gastroenterology Center, Mansoura University). Also, urine samples were collected from the same patients and healthy control groups. As well as, colonic cancer tissue specimens were obtained from some colon cancer patients during surgery
