Abstract

Iron overload and hepatic iron deposition have been reported in chronic hepatitis C and may be a direct cause of liver damage.
The beneficial effects of iron reduction therapy on hepatic inflammation have been demonstrated.
So the aim of the current work is to assess iron status (serum and hepatic) in chronic hepatitis C and its relation to interferon therapy.
It has been reported that hepatic iron is more closely. Related to response to interferon than other variable. Serum iron parameters especially (serum iron, serum ferritin, TfS) in chronic hepatitis C were elevated.
Mild elevation in hepatic iron was noted in the present study and most of the relapsed patients are among cases with increased hepatic iron.
Pretreatment detection of hepatic iron concentration may be and additional host-specific parameter with a predictive value for responsiveness to IFN therapy.
