Abstract The growing concern in recent years around the world regarding environmental pollution, maintaining the health of the human being, the anticipation of tightened global wastewater discharge regulations and the need for reuse of water are the main driving forces for the development of new technologies for water purification. This study was carried out to assess the feasibility of applying advanced water treatment technologies for treating water containing humic acids, industrial wastewater and domestic wastewater. Besides emphasis on the application of aerobic side stream membrane bioreactor (MBR) for the treatment of potato-processing wastewater and domestic wastewater, nanofiltration treatment technique was investigated for the removal of humic acids from water. Moreover, the biodegradability of the humic acids, potato-processing wastewater and domestic wastewater was studied and assessed. The effect of operating the MBR with and without backwash was assessed as well, aiming to gain the maximum water recovery, higher permeate flux accompanied by less biofouling and less need for chemical cleaning of the membrane in the MBR system. This thesis comprises four main chapters as follows:- (l) Introduction and Literature review: This part includes explanation and case studies of several concepts, which included in this study such as: 1- membrane filtration and membrane configuration. 2• biological processes. 3- membrane bioreactor (MBR); both of side stream and submerged. 4- direct filtration versus membrane bioreactors. 5- the current status of membrane bioreactors for wastewater treatment. 6- industrial and domestic wastewater treatment using aerobic MBR. 7-industrial wastewater treatment using anaerobic MBR. 8- industrial wastewater treatment using anoxic MBR. 9- the classification of wastewater organic matters. 10- types of industry and their typical wastewater characteristics. 11- industrial wastewater from potato-processing and miscellaneous studies for treatment of potato-processing wastewater.12- humic acids, disinfection of water containing humic acids, disinfection by-products formation pathways and removal of humic substances from water. |
