Abstract

The present investigation concerned with a comparative study on the morphological and histological structure of the digestive tract of the insectivores (long eared hedgehog), frugivores (fruit eating bat), omnivores (mice), herbivores (rabbit) and carnivores (dog). Also, scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to investigate the morphology of the duodenal villi and the ultrastructural aspects of the duodenal and colonic mucosae of the investigated species. The morphological studies showed that frugivorous bat stomach was varied in shape comparing to those of the other studied species. It was roughly U shaped and elongate with a large cardiac caecum , a large fundus and a long pylorus. The histological study indicated that the submucosal esophageal glands were lacking in frugivorous bat, mice and rabbit but present in the long eared hedgehog and dog. Also, the submucosal (Brunner) glands of the duodenum were present in the long eared hedgehog, frugivorous bat and rabbit. The investigation of the morphological appearance of the duodenal villi by scanning electron microscope were tongue shaped as in long eared hedgehog or leaf like as in frugivorous bat or finger shaped as in rabbit or fungiform as in dog.
