Abstract

This research presents the effect of externally bonded carbon fiber Reinforced polymer (CFRP) sheets on the load carrying capacity of the reinforced concrete beams (R.C.B.) in cases of flexure and shear test. To achieve this goal, sixteen R.C.B. were cast. The cross section of R.C.B. was 120 X 200 mm with total length of 2300 mm. These beams were divided into two main parts, each part consists of two groups, every group contains four beams. All beams were tested with clear span of 2000 mm. In flexure test all beams were tested with shear span to depth ratio (a/d) = 4.29 while in shear test , a/d was chosen 3.14 for the first group and a/d = 2.29 for the second group. Test results exhibited enhancement of load carrying capacity with a range varied from 12<U+2013>40% compared to control beam in flexure test. This enhancement depends on strengthening ratio( = Afr/AS ) . In shear test the enhancement in load carrying capacity ravaged from 10 <U+2013>52.6% depending on a/d ratio. The test results were verified by the existing equations in ACI code. The analytical study of the load carrying capacity of the strengthened beams showed a good agreement with the experimental test results. In flexure test the experimental loading capacity was higher than the analytical load with an average range varied from 14.4 to 36.7%, where as in shear test, the experimental loading capacity was higher than the analytical load with an average percent ranged from 2.44 to 35.8
