Abstract

Introduction: Denture stomatitis is a multifactorial disease leading patient unable to masticate with associated pain and discomfort and its management is a major duties for prosthodontist. In this study the treatment of denture stomatitis was planned firstly to reduce denture trauma by construction of new properly fitting dentures relined with soft liner materials, secondly to inhibit microbial growth on soft lining materials by using chitosan film coating to maximize the role of soft lining materials. Materials and Methods: According to the plane of this study, all patients were randomly classified into two groups: Group I: included 10 patients for whom a new conventional upper and lower heat cured acrylic complete denture were constructed and maxillary dentures were relined at time of acrylic packing with MolloplastB silicone soft liner. Group II : included 10 patients for whom a new conventional upper and lower heat cured acrylic complete denture were constructed and maxillary dentures were relined with PermafixKohler silicone soft liner. Relining was done chair sided and intra orally at time of denture insertion. Results: This microorganism colonization appeared to be inhibited after chitosan film coating and denture wearing for long time (45days) for both groups (third observation). The antimicrobial effect of chitosan may be related to its ability to prevent adherence of streptococci and candida albicans to solid surfaces and to human epithelial cells beside its damaging effect on bacterial cell wall. Conclosion: Accordingly it can be concluded that, silicone soft liner coating with chitosan film coat had a significant role in subsiding signs and symptoms of denture stomatitis and microorganisms colony growth reduction, making chitosan as a powerful antimicrobial biosynthetic materials
