Abstract

This study was carried on ten completely edentulous male patients to study the effect of different posterior occlusal plane orientation techniques on their speech pattern. According to the posterior maxillary occlusal plane orientation techniques, the posterior artificial teeth were arranged and replaced four times as follows: Group(A): posterior occlusal plane oriented parallel to alatragus line. Group(B): posterior occlusal plane oriented by vestibular functional impression. Group(C): posterior occlusal plane oriented according to cephalometric radiograph Group(D): posterior occlusal plane oriented according to midway between the ridges. The speech pattern of each patient were evaluated subjectively and objectively before and after denture insertion after each orientation technique. The speech sounds selected for this study were the /k/ and /x/ sounds in combination with the vowels /(R5? (B, /i/ and /u/ in the beginning of syllables and words and also loaded in sentences. The results of this study revealed that: 1 There is a statistically significant differences in the objective speech parameters between the predenture state and after denture insertion. 2 Regardless the posterior occlusal plane orientation technique, the posterior part of the denture affect the acoustic parameters of vowels, especially the formant frequencies rather than the tested consonants. from the results of this study, it could be concluded that: 1 The functional and cephalometric posterior occlusal plane orientation techniques should be used with caution especially for the professional voice users. 2 Unless challenged with the functional requirements of the denture ,rather than phonetics, the anatomical and midway posterior occlusal plane orientation technique are more simple and convenient techniques.
