Abstract

The present study aimed at investigating the effectiveness of a proposed curriculum in developing firstyear secondary school students? oral expression. Subjects in this study were firstyear secondary school students at Naser Secondary School, Damietta governorate in the academic year 2004 2005. They were randomly assigned into two groups; experimental and control group. The experimental group (35 students)studied the proposed curriculum based on thinking skills and the regular curriculum. The control group (35 students) received oral expression instruction through the regular curriculum. Two tests were developed and used as prepost measures. EFL Oral Thinking Skills Test was administrated to identify the students? use of thinking skills orally. EFL Oral Expression Test was administered to identify the students? level in oral expression. A proposed curriculum was developed by the researcher. The experimental group studied such a curriculum in three months. By the end of the experiment, posttests were administered to both groups to find out the effectiveness of the curriculum. The results of the study showed that: 1. There was a statistically significant difference at 0.0001 level between the mean scores of the experimental and the control group in oral thinking skills in the posttest in favor of the former. 2. There was a statistically significant difference at 0.0001 level between the mean scores of the experimental and the control group in oral expression in the posttest in favor of the former. 3. There was a positive and statistically significant correlation at 0.0001 level between students? oral thinking skills and their oral expression.
