Abstract This work aimed to establish the role of micronutrients as zinc and selenium in the pathogenesis and control of IDDM. This study was carried out on 40 patients with IDDM defined according to WHO criteria (WHO, 1985). The ages of patients ranged from 5 to 18 years with a mean age of 10.8 years. They included 25 females (62.5%) and 15 males (37.5%). A group of 15 healthy children 8 females (53.3%) and 7 males (46.7%), with a mean age of 10.6 years were chosen as a control group for laboratory investigations. Patients and controls were subjected to the following investigations: 1. Random blood glucose concentration. 2. HA1c determination for assessment of metabolic control at the time of inclusion in the study. 3. Determination of serum level of zinc. 4. Determination of serum level of selenium. 5. Serum creatinin. The results of this study revealed: 1. Significant higher levels of height percentage and weight percentage in control group compared to IDDM cases. 2. Significant higher levels of HA1c in IDDM patients compared to controls. 3. Significant higher levels of serum zinc in IDDM patients compared to controls. |
