Abstract

This prospective study was carried out on fifteen head trauma patients aged 30 to 50 years admitted to the surgical intensive care unit in Mansoura Emergency Hospital for mechanical ventilation and critical care, All patients were supine with slight head elevation, sedated, paralyzed, and initially ventilated with volume controlled mechanical ventilation (VCV) for 12 hours then the mode of ventilation was changed to pressure controlled ventilation (PCV) for next 12 hours by using the same parameters, and inspiratory pressure which gave the equivalent tidal volume used in the volume controlled mode. It can be concluded that both volumecontrolled ventilation and pressurecontrolled ventilation similarly have no significant differences on the hemodynamics of mechanically ventilated head trauma patients with healthy cardiovascular and pulmonary systems.
