Abstract

the present research aimed to evaluate the effect of two fluoride varnishes (duraphat and fluorprotector ) on early enamel carious lesions in pre-school children. it was divided into two parts; clinical and radiographic parts. a-clinical evaluation the study was carried out on 150 children from the el-shinnawy mabara kindergarten in mansoura city. clinical examination was performed at the mabara kindergarten for selection of the participated children. every child should have at least one tooth with initial carious lesion, the selected children were transported to the faculty of dentistry for radiographic examination. bitewing radiographs were taken to confirm that, the caries was confined to the enamel and not progressed to the dentine. the selected children were divided into three equal groups according to the applied varnish as follow: - a-group i (50 child): the duraphat varnish was applied. b-group ii (50 child): the fluorprotector varnish was applied c- group iii (50 child): placebo varnish was applied (control). for the children in the three groups, the demft, demfs, det, and des were recorded at baseline and after twelve months. the three varnishes were applied according to the manufacture`s instructions, at baseline and after four months. data were collected and statistically analyzed, the study showed that, there was a significant reduction in (demft, demfs, det and des) in both duraphat and fluorprotector groups after twelve months in comparison with the baseline. the comparison between duraphat and fluorprotector varnishes showed that, there was a significant difference between the two varnishes and duraphat varnish was more effective in reducing the caries incidence than the fluorprotector varnish. also the best effect of the two varnishes were on the occlusal surface then the buccal surfaces. b-radiographic evaluation at baseline, rubber base impressions were taken for every child and the same impressions were used as a film holder through the follow up times (12 months). standardized periapical radiographs were taken for the lower first and/or second primary molars with active enamel carious lesion at baseline before the first application of the varnish, then after 1, 4, 6, 9, and 12 months, the second application of fluoride varnish was done after four months before taken the radiographs. the x-ray films were collected and developed automatically after twelve months, then scanned and digitized for measurement of; mean carious lesion density, and mean carious lesion surface areas. data were collected and statistically analyzed, and there were no statistical significant differences between the three groups at baseline. then at every follow up periods, there were statistical significant differences between the three groups. in the duraphat and fluorprotector groups, there were significant increase in the mineral density and significant decrease in the caries surface area. while in the control group there were significant decrease in mineral density and significant increase in the caries surface area
