Abstract In the last decade, 3DRT has been used for treating head and neck cancer in the setting of radical cure and in salvage of persistent local disease. This approach encompasses a wide spectrum of techniques including three dimensional conformal radiotherapy treatment (3DCRT), stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS), fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT), and more recently, intensity modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). These techniques help us to reduce side effects of radiotherapy treatment and at the same time, achieve good control of the tumor especially in this sensitive area which responds rapidly to hazards of radiation treatment. Aim of the work: This work is to review briefly the advances in radiotherapy planning, treatment and its future developments in head and neck cancer with stress on the application of Intensity modulated radiotherapy treatment (IMRT) in head and neck cancer. Conclusions: The great advances in radiotherapy planning and treatment including inverse planning, conformal radiotherapy, stereotactic radiotherapy and IMRT are used in the treatment of head and neck cancer. They are still in the first steps and in need for much new work at the side of physical, engineering, biological and clinical aspects to reach the maximum benefits of these technology to be applicable to different sites in the body to get the best results of the radiation treatment. |
