Abstract

The present work proved that some environmental hazard may threaten the development activities in the study area. Such hazards include, migration of sand dune. Several field observation indicating the migration of pre existing sand dunes are recorded in the study area. Sand movement may also impede the reclamation and agricultural activities and the transportation on the international coastal high way as the dunes cut the road during their movement. Several methods have been implemented for dune fixation along the study area, including vegetation wind break, wind fences, chemical sprays of thin layer of asphalt, gravel or coarse aggregate placed over a sand surface to prevent its deflation and the natural vegetation which coverd and fixed the dunes. However, the wind fences and vegetation covers are suitable means for stabilizing the dunes along the study area, as these are non costly and non pollutant. Also coastal erosion with rapid shoreline retreat which was about 5 m/ year, which threaten Burollos village. The artificial fish ponds near the international coastal highway may form one of the hazards that threaten the road and cause damage to its base.
