Abstract

Complete denture must be fashioned so that they are in harmony with normal neuromuscular function of the edentulous patient. Contouring of the palatal polished surface of the maxillary complete denture is one of the most important factor involved in functional denture construction. This work was aimed to study the effect of different palatal contouring techniques on their swallowing function of complete denture wearers. This study was carried on ten completely edentulous healthy male patients with their ages ranged between 46-65 years.
According to the palatal polished surface contour, the maxillary dentures were grouped as follows:
Arbitrary denture : where the palatal polished surface of the
maxillary denture was arbitrary contoured.
Functional denture : where the palatal polished surface of the maxillary denture was functionally contoured.
For group I, the swallowing activity of each patient was evaluated immediately before and after 2 weeks of denture insertion. For group II, after 2 weeks rest interval, the palatal polished surface was replaced by functionally contoured palatal polished surface to be evaluated for swallowing after 2 weeks of denture insertion.
The swallowing study was done by using videofluoroscopy. The patient was asked to swallow different bolus consistencies in different volumes. The swallowing measures selected for this study were:
