Abstract Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by hyperglycemia due to defect in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Abnormalities in the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and fats are also present. In this study, the treatment with Cleome droserifolia significantly ameliorated the adverse influence of streptozotocin. Oral supplementation of an aqueous extract of Cleome droserifolia for two weeks after streptozotocin administration resulted in a lowered blood glucose levels, an increased hepatic glycogen contents, an improved lipid profiles and a regulation in the metabolic enzymes of glucose utilization as compared to rats administered with streptozotocin alone. The hypoglycemic, antioxidant and hypolipidemic activities of Cleome droserifolia, as shown in the present results, were due to Cleome droserifolia decreased the blood glucose through increase in glycogensis pathway, insulin secretion from pancreas, oxidation of glucose through pentose phosphate pathway, and decrease in gluconeogensis pathway. It was also shown that Cleome droserifolia decreased the oxidative stress through stimulating the synthesis of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and reduced glutathione (GSH), and also decreased lipid peroxidation.. |
