Abstract The present thesis deals with sedimentology and mineralogy of some Miocene exposures around Qattara escarpment. The Miocene exposures (Moghra and Mamarica Formations) were systematically examined at Qaret Somara, Minquar Abu Duweis and Naqb Abd El Hady - El Tarfaya composite section. The field work also included the examination of primary sedimentary structures in relatively small Miocene outcrops at Minquar El Raml and Rowei El Gamus. About 170 samples were selected for textural analysis, mineral composition and recognition of facies types. The depositional environments of the dominant facies and their diagenetic processes have been attempted. Finally all results obtained are combined and utilized to reveal the geologic history of the area during the Miocene. The main conclusions achieved throughout this study are summarized below. |
