Abstract

Non invasive mechanical ventilation (NIMV) refers to all treatment modalities in which ventilation is assisted without using an inasive endotracheal airway. NIMV is safe and effective technique that can avoid the side effects and complications associated with endotracheal intubation. NIPPV has assumed an important role in acute and chronic respiratory failure. Regardless of the underlying cause of the respiratory failure, patients to receive NIPPV must be selected carefully. Also, in both acute and chronic settings, experience and skill with the implementation of NIPPV are important. Proper fit and application of the mask are keys to success. In carefully selected patients initiated according to current recommendations and monitored in an appropriate setting, NIPPV can be delivered safely with no or minor adverse effects. The failure rate remains substantial at roughly a quarter to a third but hopefully will decline as clinicians gain experience, selection criteria are refined, and technology improves. Conclusion :- NIPPV should be considered a lung protective strategy for certain forms of respiratory failure, and clinicians caring for patients with respiratory failure should have skill and experience with NIPPV applications.
