Abstract Introduction: Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a chronic painful condition characterized by widespread musculoskekeletal pain, sleep disturbances and depressive manifestations. Many of FMS features is attributed to HPA axis perturbation including disturbance of the neuropeptide Y (NPY). Patients and methods: In the present study, we have measured the level of serum NPY in FMS patients and in other related chronic painful conditions (psych. rheum, RA and OA) and in normal controls. We have also studied the relationship between serum level of NPY and various demographic and clinical data of these patients. 89 patients were included in the study; 41 FMS patients, 12 osteoarthritis patients, 12 rheumatoid arthritis patients, 12 psychogenic rheumatism patients and 12 healthy volunteers. Results: The present study showed that FMS was more prevalent in premenopausal females (61.0 %) with high incidence of emotional trauma in the history (58.5 %), overall sleep disturbance was present in 100.0 % of patients. In addition, it showed high prevalence of depression (85.4 %) and a diversity of personality tendencies with predominance of anxiety (90.2 %) and depression (75.6 %). Furthermore, functional impairment was present in 78.0 % of FMS patients. We have found a close relationship between patients with FMS and ps. rheum. regarding psychogenic and psychosomatic factors. Conclusions: NPY is not a specific marker of FMS but it was found lower in all other studied chronic painful conditions. |
