Abstract

Background: Hypertension in children is currently recognized as an important health issue Objects: provide the necessary background information, diagnostic strategies especially ‎ambulatory blood pressure and treatment recommendations required for children with ‎hypertension. ‎ Methods and results: Hypertension can be classified as primary and secondary. Most of ‎childhood hypertension is secondary. Mercury sphygmomanometer is the gold standard for ‎measurement of BP in a child. ABPM is very useful in the evaluation of hypertension in special ‎conditions. Effective treatment of hypertensive children requires a comprehensive approach ‎incorporating non-pharmacologic measures and pharmacologic treatment.‎ Conclusion: Hypertension in children is increasing in incidence. Most children have secondary ‎hypertension. When discovered, elevated BP should be appropriately investigated with the ‎evaluation tailored to the age of the child and the severity of the BP elevation. The workup is ‎simple and inexpensive. Treatment should begin with non pharmacologic measures. ‎
