Abstract

This study explain the effect of Omega -3 fatty acid on bone healing in
Ginea pigs so, this study contains 48 adult male their weight 400-500 gm
and divided into control group and treated group, twenty four animals at
each group. Control group received the vehicle of the drug (corn oil) orally
for three months and treated group received omega-3 fatty acid orally
dissolved in vehicle for three months. Then, the animals of both groups were
subjected to bone defect surgery in the mandible under the general
anesthesia and sacrificed at 1, 3& 5 weeks respectively. Then examination
after staining by Haematoxyline and Eosin stain, Masson’s trichrome,
Periodic acid- Schiff. (PAS), Alkaline phosphatase and Acid phosphatase
stain and this study concluded that administration of omega-3 fatty acid in
guinea pigs with mandibular bone defects lead to: Regression of post
surgical inflammation in comparison to control group, Enhancement in the
matrix formation resulting in acceleration in the rate of bone formation. So it is recommended to use omega-3 fatty acid in treatment of alveolar bone loss as a result of periodontitis, and after any surgery result in bone defect in
both jaws.
