Abstract

This study aimed at proposing an ESP program for the hotel secondary school students in the light of their linguistic and communicative needs. The problem of the study can be crystallized in the following questions:1- What are the Hotel Secondary School students’ needs in learning English? 2- What are the linguistic and the communicative skills required for the Hotel Secondary School students? 3- To what extent can the present course satisfy the needs and provide the skills required for the Hotel Secondary School students? 4- What is the suggested ESP program for the Hotel Secondary School students? 5- What is the effectiveness of the suggested program in improving the linguistic and communicative skills of the Hotel Secondary School students? To design this program, the needs of the students were investigated through four questionnaires (students’ questionnaire, language teachers’ questionnaire, subject teachers’ questionnaire and hotel employees’ questionnaire). The data obtained were analyzed and this data analysis was the basis according to which the objectives of the proposed program were stated, the framework was designed, and the linguistic and communicative skills to be worked on through the proposed program were given a relative weight. The sample used in the questionnaires included (95) first year students of Zagazig Hotel Secondary School, (41) language teachers in hotel schools, (41) hotel subject teachers and (24) hotel employees. The experimental sample of the study consisted of (67) first year students of The Hotel Secondary School in Zagazig. This sample was divided into an experimental group (number = 35) and a control group (number = 32). To assess the effectiveness of the proposed ESP program, the researcher designed a battery of five pre-post tests dedicated to measure the learners’ progress in each of the four basic communicative skills of hotel English (listening, speaking, reading and writing) in addition to the linguistic skills of hotel English (grammatical structures, expressions, abbreviations, terminology, vocabulary and translation) to which the fifth test was devoted. The results of the pre-post tests supported the hypotheses of the study. Thus, it was found that there were statistically significant differences between the mean scores of both the experimental and the control groups on the post-administration of the listening, speaking, reading, writing and linguistic skills tests in favour of the experimental group. Besides, there were statistically significant differences between the experimental groups’ mean scores on both the pre-and post-administrations of the listening, speaking, reading, writing and linguistic skills tests in favour of the post administration. Thus, the post-measures revealed that the learners could attain distinguished improvement in their communicative and linguistic cornoetences of hotel Enzlish because of the effectiveness of the proposed ESP program.
