Abstract

Various tools and techniques have been utilized to determine rubidium. Usually it is present in trace amounts in natural materials.
Atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) is one of the most important methods for determination of rubidium. It has much application in geological, biological studies as well as in other fields. AAS is less expensive than other techniques such as X-ray fluorescence, neutron activation analysis and (NAA) and inductively coupled plasma techniques.
Problems may be encountered in element measurements by this approach, but can be overcome easily due to high performance of this technique. Inter-element effects and physical interference are the major problems encountered in this application. The present thesis includes three main parts. These are.
Part I: Introduction
It includes some information about rubidium and the different methods used for its determination. It includes also some information about AAS and the interference problems.
Part II: Material and Methods
It includes the specification chemicals, reagents and instruments applied in the present work. Beside the recommended method that should be used for sample preparation.
Part III: Results and Discussion:
This part summarizes the obtained results and divided into three main items which are.
- Optimization of the instrumental parameters to obtain the best sensitivity and detection limit for Rb.
- Interference studies from the matrices in which Rb may be exist.
- The application of the proposed method for Rb determination on different rocks.
Conclusion
The FAAS method described for the determination of Rb in geological materials is rapid and simple. It is found to be sufficiently and interference free. Nitric acid is chosen for the preparation of rock solution because it has no effect on the absorbance of rubidium. The rubidium determination is performed directly without masking agent. The procedure showed excellent reproducibility and accuracy consequently FAAS determination of Rb can be suitable for routine geochemical analysis.
