Abstract

This thesis deals with the synthesis of the ligands 6-amino-2-thiouracil and three of its derivatives and their complexes formed with copper, beside the uses of the ligands as antifouling and anticorrosive paint formulations . It comprises four chapters. The first includes fouling problem and marine corrosion and the methods used for calculating them and for their control.
Chapter two reviews the organic compounds used for fouling control such as azole, mercaptans, carbamate, pyrimidine and pyridine compounds. Besides, it deals with the biological activities, complexes and applications of thiouracil compounds.
Chapter three includes the procedure used for the synthesis of 6- amino -2- thiouracil and three of its derivatives, description of the paint preparation containing the synthesized compounds and their testing. Also, it contains the methods of analysis and measurements of environmental parameters and the corrosion test procedure and the composition of the used steel .
The last chapter includes the results and their discussion in twelve parts. The first part describes the stoichiometry of the ligands : physical properties and proposed structures . The second part shows the mass spectra of the ligands and the electron impact of each ligand . The third part includes the measurements of the electronic absorption spectra of the four synthesized ligands in different media. The fourth part includes the study of the 1HNMR spectra of the four ligands measured in D2O and DMSO. The fifth part discusses the infrared absorption spectra of the four ligands and reveals their presence in the thione - thiol forms . The sixth part deals with the ligands - metal composition and the different media used with the preparation of the copper complexes . The seventh part deals with the 1HNMR spectra of the diamagnetic copper complexes of 6-amino - 2- thiouracil in D2O and DMSO. The eighth part discusses the infrared spectra of the copper complexes in both aqueous and ethanolic media. The ninth part deals with the electronic spectra of the copper complexes in both aqueous and ethanolic media. The tenth part deals with the results of the laboratory corrosion tests. The eleventh part reveals the effect of the coated steel panels with the paints containing the four synthesized compounds on some physical and chemical parameters of seawater. The twelfth part deals with testing the antifouling property of the four synthesized thiouracil compounds.
