Abstract

Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by hyperglycaemia due to deficiency or diminished effectivness of insulin.
A wide variety of herbal preparations are being used in the treamrnt of diabetes. in folklore medicineto be of benefit in this context . Their introduction to modern medicine needs chemical , pharmacological and clinical investigations.
The present study is contribution in this field and includes :
Screening of certain local plants for hypoglycaemic activities in glucose loaded animals.
Nine plant materials growing in Egypt, reputed in folklore medicine for their hypoglycaemic activities, were subjected to experimental screening in glucose loeded rabbits..
Five of them namely Balanites a egyptiaca, Ambrosia maritima, Salvadora persica, Chrozophora obliqua and Hibiscus sabdariffa exhibited significant hypoglycaemic actions at 2 h. after oral administrationtheir aqueous decoctions.
