Abstract

In this thesis we prepare two type of base matrix, poly (ST-Co-MMA) and an inorganic sol-gel glasses, which are characterized spectroscopically by using FT-IR which give information on the characteristic bands of the copolymer and sol-gel glasses. Also, by using DSC, which shows a single glass transition temperature at ST/MMA 50/50 copolymer and TGA which provides thermal stability of poly (ST-Co-MMA) than PMMA. The photodegradation measurement of the copolymer samples pure and doped with dyes showed that the copolymerization of styrene with MMA modifies the photostability of homopolymer and doped dye. The optical energy gap (Eg) and the Urbach’s energy (Eu) of dye/copolymer and dye/sol-gel have been calculated before and after exposure to UV radiation. The fluorescence spectra for different dyes concentrations were measured and the fluorescence quantum yield (f) as well as the energy yield of fluorescence (Ef) have been calculated.
Three models of (FSCs) have been prepared (I) single coloured plates, (II) plate containing multiple dyes and (III) stack of different coloured plate. The optical efficiency (opt) was calculated for three models of (FSCs) from hourly output current for one season (Autumn 2003). The average values of (opt) of single coloured plate perylene/copolymer is higher than 427 dye/copolymer and coumarin 6/copolymer. Also, the values of optical efficiency for the stack model are higher than those for the copolymer plate containing multiple dyes by 19%. This can be attributed to the stack model absorb wide range of the solar spectrum and concentrate it to the edges of the plates where it can be converted to electricity by adapted solar cells.
