Abstract

The study area is concerned within the Gulf of Suez region which
represents one of the most prolific and prospective oil provinces in Egypt.
The investigated area occupies the extreme southwestern part of the Gulf of
Suez extending to the uppermost of the northwestern portion of the Red
Sea. It includes both offshore and onshore parts north of Hurghada. It lies
between Latitudes 27 10′- 27 35′ N and Longitudes 33 40′- 34 00′ E
and covers about 1500 square kilometers. The study area and the Gulf of
Suez region acquire the form of an elongated NW-SE depression. It is
mainly dipping to the SW direction.
This work aims to map the geology of buried basement rocks, their
structures and lithology, and to determine the thickness and intruded bodies
that complicate the stratigraphic sequence. Thus, the targets of the present
study are; (1) to outline the geological set-up and the structural features
affecting the basement complex and the overlying sedimentary cover (2) to
study the configuration of the existing sedimentary basins and ridges and
the related swells and troughs of the basement complex (3) to give
reasonable picture for shallow and deep seated structure intervening their
rocks (4) to emphasize the tectonic elements (5) to differentiate between
the magnetic sources of the intruded bodies (dykes, contacts & faults) (6) to
reveal the sites probably enriched with metallic ore deposits (7) to throw
light on the most prospective and promising locations for other further
hydrocarbon exploration.
