Abstract approximately 170 million people are infected with hepatitis C virus. Infection with hepatitis C virus is often associated with extra hepatic manifestations affecting up to 36% of hepatitis C virus infected individuals. Hepatitis C virus arthritis closely mimic rheumatoid arthritis particularly as rheumatoid factor is present in 50-80% of cases. Arthritis related to hepatitis C virus is commonly presented as rheumatoid like, symmetrical inflammatory polyarthritis involving mainly small joints or less commonly as mono or oligoarthritis usually of the large joints. Hepatitis C virus arthritis should be considered in the differential diagnosis of seronegative arthritis of undetermined etiology even in normal liver chemistries. |
