Abstract

There are large number of pharmaceutically important drugs that contain nitrogen and sulphur. In this thesis, the study was adopted for different drugs belonging to different classes such as: carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (acetazolamide), thiazolidinediones oral hypoglycaemic agents (rosiglitazone maleate), H2 receptor antagonist anti-ulcer drugs (famotidine), antipsychotics (fluphenazine hydrochloride), and antidepressants (nortriptyline hydrochloride and sertraline). A simple spectrophotometric method for the determination of acetazolamide in pure form and pharmaceutical preparations is performed based on its complexation with palladium (II) chloride in acetate buffer (pH 5.4). Determination of rosiglitazone maleate in pure form and pharmaceutical preparations through complexation with both cupper (ΙΙ), and aluminium (ΙΙΙ) in borate buffer (pH 6.5) was performed. Another spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of the drug in pure form, pharmaceutical preparations, and biological fluids based on complex formation with Al3+ in acetate buffer of pH 5.0 was adopted. Two spectrofluorimetric methods were developed for the determination of famotidine in pharmaceutical preparations and biological fluids based on either ternary complex formation with some lanthanides; or on its reaction with 9, 10-phenanthraquinone to give a highly fluorescent derivative. A rapid and simple second-derivative synchronous fluorimetric method for the simultaneous analysis of binary mixtures of fluphenazine hydrochloride and nortriptyline hydrochloride in their co-formulated tablets was performed. Finally a simple, stability - indicating, reversed phase high performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of sertraline in the presence of its oxidative degradation product was studied. The suggested methods are successfully applied for the determination of the studied compounds in their pure, dosage forms and in biological fluids. The results were statistically compared with those obtained by the official or reference methods and found to be in good agreement
