Abstract

Gestational trophoblastic disease is a spectrum of interrelated disease processes originating from the trophoblast. This comprises many histological entities including hydatidiform mole, invasive mole, gestational choriocarcinoma, and placental site trophoblastic tumor. This review aims to present current thinking on new diagnostic approaches as well as new treatment options in gestational trophoblastic disease specially those preserving normal reproductive function. Most women with all forms of gestational trophoblastic disease can be successfully diagnosed and treated with preservation of their normal reproductive function. It is important to manage molar pregnancies properly to minimize acute complications and identify malignant sequelae promptly. Also, to inform women and their physicians about the risk of developing persistent disease or remission and reduce the interval between the diagnosis of molar pregnancy and the diagnosis of persistent disease. Patients with malignant gestational trophoblastic neoplasia should be managed in consultation with an individual experienced in the complex multimodality treatment of these patients.
