Abstract Aim of work: to assess the guidelines and meta-analysis of genetic bases of epilepsy and the best preventive and therapeutic measures of epilepsy syndromes. Most of the treatments available for epilepsy are symptomatic and aim to reduce the recurrence of seizures and none of these lines of treatments (except perhaps resective surgery) can change the natural course of the disease. Genetic factors have influences on idiopathic than symptomatic epilepsies so, demonstration of the genetic basis of the epilepsies may help in development of new methods of treatment and even preventive measures. Gene therapy is a promising new approach for the treatment of epilepsy because it is long lasting therapeutic gene, as well as the ability to target the causative regions of epilepsy. The use of cell transplants as factories to produce endogeneous anticonvulsants or to repair abnormal ictogenic and epileptogenic neuronal circuits has generated hope that cell-based therapies could become a novel therapeutic category in the treatment of epilepsy. |
