Abstract

This studies were carried out at a private apiary in Meat Fares Village, Bani Ebaied Region, El-Dakahlia Governorate, Egypt, 25 km. from Mansoura. Through four years of developing and improving a new device for the instrumental insemination of honey bee queens with many advantages.
Therefore we used the new instrument in four studies to investigate the following aims :
1. Laboratory study to evaluate the efficacy of the new apparatus for the instrumental insemination. The spermatheca color found to be tan and creamy while the virgin queen spermatheca is clear and transparent.
Brood viability were found to be equalized with naturally mated queens with no significant difference P > 0.05).
2. Field study to compare the onset of oviposition between instrumentally inseminated and naturally mated queens. The mean latency period for the naturally mated queens was (12.66 ± 1.93 days) while it was (19.42 ± 1.71 days) for the instrumentally inseminated queens.
3. Field study to compare brood production between instrumentally inseminated and naturally mated queens. The mean brood production for the naturally mated queens was (374.20 ± 89.57 in2) while it was (292.73 ± 23.92 in2) for the instrumentally inseminated queens.
Field study to compare honey production between instrumentally inseminated and naturally mated queens. The mean honey yields for the naturally mated queens was (4.605 ± 1.811 kg) while it was (5.128 ± 0.220 kg) for the instrumentally inseminated queens.
