Abstract In the present work an attempt to study the control of contaminant transport through porous medium by using sheet piles are conducted. The regional contaminated groundwater flow field in two dimensions is studied numerically using the method of finite elements. The equations of contaminant transport through advection, diffusion, dispersion and adsorption are combined with the groundwater flow equations to obtain the contaminant distribution as a function of soil, contaminant and fluid properties. The influence of installing a vertical sheet piles on the rate of contaminant transport is studied for different penetration depths of the sheet piles. Design charts are presented for quantifying the effects of the sheet piles wall on the hydraulic control of the groundwater flow field. from the charts, the sheet piles depth can be selected depending on the required hydraulic conductivity, distance between contamination source and Sheet piles and the time chosen for the contamination to reach the other side of the sheet piles. The charts can be used in the preliminary design works which reflects their influence on the cost estimate of the used dewatering complementary remedial system. Calibration of the used numerical works is conducted using Sand Box Model. The comparison between the amplitude and location of the peak of contamination front shows good agreement between numerical and experimental results for the same domain dimension, soil parameters, initial and boundary conditions. |
