Abstract

It is indisputable that Egypt now is suffering from severe increase in population. Any attempt to overcome soil salinity and alkalinity may help in a partial solving the problem of the contrast between the rapidity with which the population grows and the relative slowness in the growth of agricultural production.
The present investigation was carried out on salt-affected soils in the eastern areas of the Nile Delta which are subjected to reclamation in order to clarify the mode of formation and diagnosis of such soils which may help in soil improvement or reclamation.
The conclusions drawn from the present work could be summarized in the following points :
1- It was found that the dominant factor in salinizing the surface layer of the studies soil profiles ( profiles 1, 2 at Simbillawein, 5, 6 at Kafr Sakr, 7 and 8 at Dikirins ) is the high reference level of the ground water table as well as the high concentration of salts in it. Besides the main source of irrigation water for these areas is Damietta branch, such water flows through a layer formed from sedimentary rocks rich in easily soluble salts which eventually reaches, owing to the inadequate drainage to the ground water and causes to rise its salinity.
