Abstract

The study of the rock stratigraphy of the Upper Cretaceous Section in Kafr El Dawar well - I leads to subdividing the section into the following rock units from top to bottom : (I) Chaik Formation : This formation has been subdivided into the following members from top to bottom : (A) Abu Zenima Chaik Member equivalent : (Campanian Maastrichtian). (B) Markha Chaik Member equivalent : (from the Upper Coniacian to the lower part of the Campanian). (II) Matulla Formation equivalent : (from the Upper Turonian to the Lower Coniacian) This is composed mainly of shaly limestone and some shale intercalations and shows a great resemblance to the Matulla Formation in the Guif of Suez region and Sinai. (III) Wate Formation equivalent : (The Lower part of Turonian). This is composed mainly of dolomitic limestone, and some sand grains. It shows a quite resemblance to the wata Formation in the Guif of Suez region and Sinai.
