Abstract Seventy-two male healthy NZW rabbits were randomly divided into three groups (n=24/group); Group I: Ketamine (50 mg/kg.B.W.) and Xylazine (10 mg/kg.B.W.); Group II: Ketamine (35 mg/kg.B.W.), Xylazine (5 mg/kg.B.W.), and Midazolam (1 mg/kg.B.W.); Group III: Ketamine (35 mg/kg.B.W.), Midazolam (1 mg/kg.B.W.) and Fentanyl (0.02 mg/kg.B.W.). The objective of the present study was to evaluate the anesthetic effects of some intramuscular drug combinations in the laboratory NZW rabbits used for induction of unilateral ureteric obstruction. Based on the results, the following can be concluded; a) All compared anesthetic protocols are suitable to induce an appropriate safe state of anesthesia in NZW rabbit. b) KXM provides effective surgical anesthesia in rabbit than the conventional KX regimen and can safely provide acceptable cardiovascular parameters and induce a longer anesthetic period than that of KMF. c) KX is not recommended for rabbits as animal models of diabetes mellitus and renal insufficiency. |
