Abstract

A study was carried out in El-Salhia Sheep Station, El-Sharkia Governorate, with the aim of evaluation of some of the non-genetic factors affecting body weight and body measurements of Merino lambs under Egyptian desert conditions, as well as to evaluate some genetic and phenotypic parameters for body weight and body measurements of lambs at birth, 2, 3 and 4 months of age (weaning time). Data used consisted of records obtained on 2269 Fleisch Merino lambs born during three consecutive years from 1970 to 1972 inclusive. Results obtained can be summarized as follows : Differences in body weight of lambs due to year effects were significant (p > 0.01) only at 3 months of age! They did not prove significant at the other 3 ages. Body measurements at the 4 ages studied varied from year to year and ths differences were in general significant (p < O,01) . Male lambs tended to show heavier weights and larger body measurements, but the differences did not attain significance except for body height, body length, heart girth, and thigh length at birth only. Type of birth was an important source of variation in body weights and body 1 measurements of lambs at the 4 ages studied, since differences between single and twin lambs were significant (p <0.05 or 0.01) in most cases.
