Abstract This thesis is a study of the social, economic and political realities of the African-Americans especially the black female. The study aims at highlighting one of the most prominent black female playwrights, Alice Childress who interprets the black history and the human experience of the African-American female with honesty and sensitivity. This thesis presents a thematic study of four representative plays written by Alice Childress. The thesis is composed of four chapters with a conclusion. -Chapter One: ”Alice Childress” The Mother of African-American Drama: An Introduction. -Chapter Two: The Image of Black Female Struggle Toward Racism and Segregation in Florence & Trouble in Mind. - Chapter Three: The Enactment of Black Female Self-Love in Wedding Band. - Chapter Four: The Reevaluation of Black Female Identity in Wine in the Wilderness. The Research resulted in the following : 1-The thesis main concern is to raise the consciousness and encourage the acceptance of the black self especially the black female self to be able to struggle against gender, racial discrimination and the society prejudice. 2-Throughout the realistic interpretations, the thesis dispels racial myths, false images and stereotypes of the African-Americans on the stage and highlights mutual respect, understanding and love between Americans and African-Americans 3-The thesis highlights Childress’s art of peace in seeking equality to realize better future based on equal rights and duties for both the African-Americans and the Americans with no bias or prejudice to gain the essence of humanity . |
