Abstract

The corrosion problem is a great problem, which faced the world from the last years until now. Zinc is used in a wide range of applications by various industries. This work studies the effect of nonionic surfactants, tween series, on the corrosion behavior of zinc in 0.05 M H2SO4 and 0.1 M Na2SO4 solutions as corrosive medium. The corrosion rate is measured by using weight loss, potentiodynamic, polarization resistance, AC impedance, cyclic voltammetry and potentiostatic transient techniques. The obtained results showed that the inhibition efficiency of these compounds increased by increasing their concentration and decreased by raising the temperature, so that the adsorption of these compounds is physical adsorption and follow Freundlich isotherm. Some thermodynamic parameters are computed and discussed. By studying the impact of the additives on the ethanol oxidation at Pt surface using cyclic voltammetric technique. The strong adsorption of tween compounds at Pt surface has been confirmed from the marked decrease in the ethanol oxidation current peaks. The positive shift in the onset potential of ethanol oxidation was found to increase with additive concentration. This clarify that the adsorption properties of tween compounds is a concentration dependence process. They also discussed the influence of chemical structure of these tween compounds on their inhibition efficiencies.
