Abstract

Human consumption depends mostly on broiler as a main source of animal protein because they have a high nutritive value and less expensive. In Egypt there is a big gap between satisfying food needs and the over population. This problem needs a great effort to be solved. A poultry is supposed to be a vital branch of animal production enterprises. However, a suitable design of the house seems to be important factor to increase the broiler production. A good house is one that meets both the needs of the birds and of the stockman at a reasonable cost.
The present study was conducted in the Dakahlia governorate and carried out during the period from 1994 to 1997 , on twenty-five broiler houses ( open system ). The objective of the study was to select a broiler house (open system) design, with consideration to house length/width ratio, ventilation area/floor area, feeding systems, drinking systems, ventilation systems, heating systems, lighting systems and bird density. The criteria of broiler performance include feed consumption, body weight, feed conversion ratio, mortality, and production index, Prediction equations for broiler performance under different studied parameters were developed and a computer model was also proceeded to estimate house design parameters, calculate heating and cooling load and estimate house economic feasibility. The computer model was written in VISUAL BASIC version 5.0 and the coded program is presented in the Appendix.
