Abstract

. Diabetes mellitus is a chronic health condition that requires diabetic children to self-manage their illness to prevent serious complications. There is no cure for diabetes but good health care and self-care can greatly improve the health outcome for children with diabetes. Achieving good blood glucose control usually requires frequent blood glucose monitoring, regular physical activity, multiple doses of insulin per day and nutritional therapy. Good diabetic self-care has the potential to prevent or delay the development of serious diabetes complications.The aim of this study was assessment of self-care activities performed by school-age children and adolescents suffering from Type 1 Diabetes. The study was conducted in the Diabetic and Endocrinology Out-patient Clinic at Mansoura University Children’s’ Hospital. A convenient sample of 200 school-age children and adolescents diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes mellitus since 6 months or more, aging 6 to 18 years and free from other chronic illness comprised the sample. Self-care activities of Type 1 diabetic children interview schedule and hygienic practices observational checklist were the tools used to collect the data. Each diabetic school-age children and adolescents was interviewed individually to collect necessary data then observed for his general hygiene, foot care, socks and shoes. The results of the present study indicated that the majority of the diabetic school-age children and adolescents were performing self-care in area of blood glucose monitoring, and exercise. Poor self-care practice was obvious in area of insulin administration, diet adherence, urine analysis for sugar and Ketone, hygiene, foot care and medical identification. The present study also revealed that females’ school-age children and adolescents were practicing self-care more than the males in most of diabetic self-care activities. In addition, adolescents practicing self-care activities more than the school-age children. Therefore, development of educational program for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes to be familiar with different aspects of self-care and disease management are recommended.
