The present thesis examines the concept of ”Development” in Port Said from a geographical perspective. The thesis includes seven chapters other than the introduction and the conclusion. The Introduction includes the significance of the study and the main role of development in geographical surveys, especially those related to recent developmental studies. In addition, it includes the content as well as the different stages of the study. In this regard, chapters of the study are arranged as follow. The first chapter examines site characteristics, administrative division, soil features, climate characteristics and its relation with the concept of ”Development”. It also touches upon the negative as well as positives effects it has on the process of ”Development”. The first chapter is divided into more than one section. Firstly, it sets out to specify the site to be studied as well as the spatial relations and their impact on economic development. Secondly, it touches upon geological infrastructure as well as its demography as there are various geological features throughout the governorate, considered to be a natural consequence of the relation between the sea and the land. Thirdly, it studies the climate and its impact on economic development on all levels (e.g. agriculture, industry or tourism). Fourthly, it examines upon soil features, characterized by its saline and thick texture. The second chapter deals with the human elements which affect the process of ”Development”. It studies population development and how it is influenced by certain geographical factors e.g. natural increase and immigration, taking into consideration that this latter differs from time to another. This is along with many other geographical factors like population density as well as its structure regarding education, age, race, economy etc. Besides, it refers to the vital role of means of transport present in Port Said i.e. air, land and sea transportation . This is done with special reference to sea transport due to the existence of the Suez Canal which is considered to be a link between the east and the west. However, air transportation is not well exploited in a way which suits the geographic location of Port Said among Mediterranean countries. Accordingly, land transportation plays a significant role in this regard. Later on, it highlights the housing development throughout the governorate. In this regard, we would find that the southern part of the governorate is promising as it contains a large proportion of lands. The third chapter sheds light on the concept of social development. Education as well as health services are discussed in the first and second sections. The third section, however, underlines basic infrastructure throughout the governorate like electricity, water as well as sewage networks .A great attention has been paid to sewage networks to protect the environment from pollution. The Fourth chapter, however, discusses agricultural development, shedding light on estimated area of all crops as well as crop formations. The chapter, then, analyzes vertical rural development as a means of improving the production of crops in Port Said . Furthermore, it touches upon horizontal rural development to increase cultivated lands there. The Fifth chapter discusses livestock development. It studies animal agriculture, poultry and honey bee. The study proves that there is a decrease in the number of honey beehives. The chapter also highlights fish production to show its percentage in comparison with the whole production of Egypt. This is done to know how far it contributes to the overall income of Port Said. It also shows the role of fish production in the national income of Port Said in the light of the coasts, labor forces and machines it has. The Sixth chapter discusses industrial development in Port Said. It sheds light on the new valuable resources present throughout the governorate. It highlights the geographical places of the industrial zones , distributed in four locations as follow: the industrial zone in the southern of city center, the industrial zone in the southern of Raswa , the industrial zone in the east of Port Said and the industrial zone in the south of Port Said . Then, it examines the production as well as industrial zones. It was found that engineering industries are the most prominent there. The chapter concludes with the study of industrial development, mineral resources and mineral industry. The seventh chapter, however, examines tourism development .It mentions human as well as natural sources of attraction in Port Said. It sheds light on the different types of tourism there. Besides, it shows the great role of the international tourism on that of Port Said. The chapter then sheds light on the development of tourism and its structure (Egyptians, Arabs, Foreigners), in addition to the study of residence places as well as tourist attraction sites. The Thesis ends with a conclusion. It includes a study as well as an analysis of ”Development” future in Port Said. This is done according to the national project plans for the development of Port Said scheduled to be applied till 2022 A.C . This is represented in main eight points mentioned as follow: main development, housing development, agricultural development, livestock, poultry, fishing development, industrial development, and the future vision of gas and oil. Lastly, it includes the most prominent results and recommendations of the study.
