Abstract

Infective endocarditis is an infection of heart’s inner lining (endocardium) or the heart valves. It produces both intracardiac and systemic effect, both from emboli (sterile and infected) and a variety of immunological mechanisms . The rising incidence of infective endocarditis in children is due to increase in the survival of children with congenitally malformed hearts, increase surgical correction of complex congenital cardiovascular malformations, increase in nosocomial infections especially by MRSA, increased use of indwelling intravascular lines and implantable devices has resulted in catheter-related infections, poor dentation, and the increased application of echocardiography has probably increased the rate at which infective endocarditis is diagnosed. The aim of the work is to highlight the up to date in pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of infective endocarditis in infancy and children. This well help the pediatricians to use a clear strategy for selecting the appropriate investigation and constructing the plane for prophylaxis and management that varies from medical therapy to surgical treatment .
