Abstract

Pesticides differ from any other chemical substance because they spread in the environment with the aim of controlling undesired living species. Egypt has documented extensive soil and water pollution by pesticides. Extensive use of OC pesticides from the 1960s to 1970s prompted the government to issue legislation to ban them since the 1980s. However, OC pesticides are still widely used in Egypt. Studies show that pesticides may increase the risk of cancer through a variety of mechanisms, including genotoxicity, tumor promotion, hormonal action and immunotoxicity. Toxicological profiles of each chemical, either pre-existing or newly developed are essential to insure that it can be utilized safely either by the public or under specific conditions of use such as in the workplace. Many pesticides are suspected of playing a role in certain human cancers. Several epidemiological studies found an association between NHL and malathion. Also there was a risk of NHL, glioma, rectal, lung and brain cancer among male farmers exposed to chlorpyrifos. A positive association was found between aldicarb and colon and breast cancer and carbaryl is thought to be related to an elevated risk of both melanoma and NHL. High DDT serum levels may be a risk factor for liver and breast cancer. Dithiocarbamates also was related to thyroid tumors. There is some suggestion of a possible link between PQ exposure and NHL risk in humans. Herbicides have been linked with an increased risk of colon, pancreatic and prostate cancer, as well as NHL.
