Abstract

The Japanese persimmon (Diospyros kaki, L.) was introduced to Egypt during Mohamed Ali regime, 1820-1830. In 1911, the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture imported several cultivars for commercial uses. The cultivated area has increased annually at the last few years till reached about 1431 feddans. Its fruit are considered to be a good source of nutritional compounds i.e. (different types of carotenoids, vitamin C, sugars and dietary fiber) which make persimmon preference for a healthy diet. There is high interest to increase their cultivation area and production in Egypt. Since, the climate is being suitable for tree growing. The main objectives of the present study focused to exploit the physiological roles of AA and B12 on ”Costata” persimmon trees and their fruits; on biochemical changes to prolong the storage life by controlling fruit ripening during marketing. Since the commercial methods, calcium carbide was applied to generate fruit ripening. Accordingly, fruits ripened quickly and losses were increased during the storage period. The present investigation was conducted during two successive seasons (2007 and 2008) on Japanese persimmon trees located at private orchard, cv ’Costata’ which considered the main and early ripening cultivar in Egyptian market. It can be recommended that using of both AA and B12 together as a new method to control fruit ripening during storage. Since, the old way presents much fruit breakdown after treating by calcium carbide in ripening store.
