Abstract

Postoperative endophthalmitis is the term used for severe inflammation of the intraocular structures involving the ocular fluids (either the vitreous, the aqueous humor or both) after surgery. The cause of inflammation may be infectious or non-infectious. Non-infectious endophthalmitis or TASS is an inflammatory reaction of the intraocular tissues and fluids not caused by microbial agents while infectious endophthalmitis is caused by microbial agents such as bacteria or fungi and never caused by viral or parasitic infections. The source of infection may be exogenous or endogenous. Exogenous endophthalmitis can be classified into acute, delayed-onset and conjunctival filtering-bleb associated endophthalmitis. Prevention of postoperative endophthalmitis includes pre-operative, operative and post- operative measures. Pre-operative prevention includes patient factors (health, age and socioeconomic level of the patient), hygiene of health care personnel, environmental factors (season of the operation) and pre-operative antibiotics.
